Where to report sewage issues?

Resolving sewage issues and overflows

Sewage issues in the council's owned pipes and drains can cause waste to get forced back up to the pipes of the residents. If you have noticed excessive water in the gutters or sewage overflow on your property which is originating outside your land, report the issue to your local council.

Blocked sewage pipes are usually caused by:

  • Fats, oil or grease
  • Wet wipes, tampons, or other sanitary products flushed down the toilets
  • The intrusion of tree roots or plant growth in the pipes
  • Overloading of sewerage network by stormwater
  • Burst pipes

Who is responsible for sewerage issues?

Property Owners

The property owners are responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of pipes, drains, and water tanks on the property till the water meter and the sewer connection point.

Local Council

Your local council is responsible for sewerage issues from the sewer connection points leading away from the property.

Contact your local council if:

  • If your property is flooded by public sewage.
  • The blockage is in the pipes managed by the local council.
  • If the inspection opening (IO) or overflow relief gully (ORG) is blocked or overflowing.

Reporting Sewage Issues

Overflowing sewers can get messy very fast so it is important to carry out repairs immediately.  Most councils have a claims process which allows you or your plumber to get reimbursed for the repairs carried out. If you are facing an urgent issue, contact your local plumber now, don't wait for a response from your local council. The procedure can vary slightly for each region and your plumber will be able to provide you with advice specific to your area.

Blocked drains can be cleared by using specialised equipment like CCTV drain cameras - which allows the plumbers to find the reason for the problem. Using this information, your plumber can provide advice on who is responsible and the recommended repair procedure.
