Where do I report stormwater issues?

Stormwater is the rainwater that runs off roofs, driveways, footpaths and other ground surfaces. It flows to the waterways without treatment. Problems in the stormwater infrastructure can cause pollution, damage building structures, cause erosion, destroy aquatic habitats and much more. So who is responsible for managing the stormwater and how do you report stormwater issues?

Who is responsible for managing stormwater systems?

Property owners are responsible for managing the stormwater infrastructure on their property until the point where it is connected to the council’s stormwater drainage systems.

The local councils are responsible for managing the stormwater network on the council land.

Reporting stormwater issues

Contact your local plumber for:

  • Blocked or broken - stormwater pipes, drains, and stormwater pits on your property.
  • Damaged inter-allotment drainage.
  • Damaged or broken stormwater pipes connected to the kerb.

To report a damaged stormwater network - broken pipes or blockages, missing grates/covers, gutters, blocked drains - on the council land, contact your local city council.

Brisbane City Council

To report any problems in stormwater issues in Brisbane - brisbane.qld.gov.au .

You will be asked to enter your address, and details of the problem, and you can also attach a photo of the problem. The form will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

For urgent stormwater issues, call the Brisbane City Council at 07 3403 8888 (residential customers). If you are a business owner, call 133 263 .

Neighbour Disputes

If the issue is due to stormwater runoff from your neighbour's property:

  • Speak to your neighbour and discuss the issue with them. They might be unaware of the problem and would be happy to resolve the issue.
  • If you haven’t been able to resolve the problem with your neighbour, contact the Dispute Resolution Centre at 07 3738 7000 or 1800 017 288.
  • You can use the Neighbourhood Mediation service offered by the Queensland Government.
  • Alternatively, contact the State Justice Department Dispute Resolution Centre for mediation services.
  • If the mediation process fails, contact your solicitor for assistance.
