A burst pipe incident on the Gold Coast last weekend was a great example of things going from bad to worse very quickly. The burst water main created a huge sinkhole in a Broadbeach section of the Gold Coast highway creating chaos for returning Gold Coast holidaymakers on Sunday morning (13 July 2014).
Work on the area has been hampered due to the need to cut off all electricity and gas to the hole before pipe repair crews could come in. The repair is expected to take days to complete.
The seventy-metre length of the 50-year-old water main flooded the ground under the road and pavement causing the surface to collapse. As well as flooding nearby the basement area of a nearby building, the flooding caused a 10-metre sinkhole in the street taking with it a traffic light and large sections of the road.
