Question:
What do you get when you pour fat and oil down your drain?
Answer:
You get a "Fatberg", resulting in a potential blocked drain.
Thames Water recently got complaints from residents that their toilets weren't flushing properly. So to find out what the problem was, they sent down a drain camera to investigate a possible blockage. What they uncovered amazed even them. It is what they affectionately refer to as a "Fatberg". This is essentially a lump of congealed fat and oil stuck in the drain which can lead to blocked drains ; as it did in this case.
In this case, the Fatberg was 15 tonnes of fat and sanitary wipes. As some have mentioned; "that's as big as a double-decker bus". If they hadn't discovered this and removed it when they did, they most definitely would have had raw sewage coming up through manholes and drains.
So remember, don't pour fat and oil down your drain or you may need to call us out to work out why your sewage is backing up into your toilet.
