About 1.6 million Americans don't have indoor plumbing. A recent American Community Survey report shows that almost 630,000 households in the USA do not have either a flushing toilet, a bath or shower, or hot and cold running water.
The report showed that there were areas of the country where this was more prevalent. Poorer or more sparsely populated areas had a higher percentage of homes without basic plumbing facilities. Also, areas which contain Native Indian reservations ranked high for the lack of toilets, showers, baths, and running water.
This data is amazing, the United States of America is the world's richest country, and to still have such a huge number of homes without these facilities is surprising, to say the least. The US Census recorded in 1950 that one-quarter of households didn't have a flush toilet. In the last 64 years, America has moved forward, but not all the way forward.
Running water, flushing toilets and hot showers are something a lot of Australians take for granted in 2021. We are very fortunate to have these facilities in most areas of our country. Sewer issues and lack of fresh water are problems that are thankfully short-term for most.
