Queensland Urban Utilities is carrying out underground inspections of Brisbane's sewer pipelines with the help of a robot. The company regularly inspects more than 100 km of sewer lines each year to stay on top of any potential issues.
The sewer inspection is carried out with a remote-controlled robot which uses laser technology and a CCTV camera to detect tree root intrusion, build-up of debris and any blockages. The robot is driven by an above-ground crew, avoiding having to place workers in the sometimes unsafe, confined sewerage pipe.
This form of inspection also reduces disruption to surrounding residents and roads.
Queensland Urban Utilities is maintaining the city's sewerage system as part of the $3.2 billion 10 year capital works investment.
